This comprehensive hybrid learning Utah CCW live-fire course is for anyone age 18 or older that can lawfully possess a pistol. This course is for beginners and all levels of handgun experience and (exceeds) Utah Minimum training requirements needed to apply for your Utah Concealed Firearms Permit, (CCW). After successful course completion, I will issue you a certificate of completion, will provide the required fingerprinting and photo for free and will have your packet ready to go, just mail it in to BCI in the provided envelope.
You will not find a Utah CCW course like this anywhere in Utah, it’s designed by Phil Snyder, a thirty-year Utah law enforcement veteran. When I was hired as a Utah law enforcement officer in 1996 my department’s pistol course was 40 hours long, including three 8-hour days on the range and required 1200-1500 rounds to complete the course. Our instructor’s focus was on having the proper mindset needed to survive a violent encounter. They exposed us to stressful conditions, including running up a hill to our targets and shooting under stress, focusing on proper target identification, shoot and don’t shoot scenarios, night shooting with the use of weapon lights, reloading techniques, all of this drawing from the holster and having our drills “timed”. I really liked the training we were provided, and other officers agree. This Utah CCW course is using this model above and is tailored for the concealed carry “civilian” that takes carry seriously and wants to learn “comfort” in all aspects of carry.
How does this pistol course work and what can I expect?
Step 1: E-learning modules: (4 hours) After you checkout and we receive your registration for date chosen, we will send you a link to the for the E-learning modules to complete the (classroom only) portion of pistol basics. The modules are interactive and video learning of pistol basics to include, tips for selecting the right handgun and ammunition, Pistol cleaning and maintenance and shooting fundamentals. There will be a written test at the end. This will take approximately 4 hours to complete the E-learning modules and will prepare you for the range on the date you selected.
Other topics: Use of force, carry laws, storage tips for handguns and the Utah Concealed Carry Permit
Step 2: Range day practice (outdoor range) and qualification (8 hours)
We will meet at the range, and you will demonstrate the practical skills you learned through the E-learning on the range with your handgun. We will practice shooting and will qualify on targets. We will teach you safe drawing and re-holstering on the range. Shooting will start after drawing from the holster and end re-holstering. You will learn effective pistol clearing techniques under stress and will practice these until mastered. The intent of this 8-hour day of the range is to get the student “comfortable” shooting their handgun to get used to it and any problems it may have by its owner’s use and equipment. It’s also a confidence builder which is needed for successful regular carry.
What equipment is needed?
Pistol with at least two magazines. (We have rental guns available if you don’t have one)
Magazine Carrier: A single our double magazine carrier strongly recommended, you will be reloading on the range and need a place to store that 2nd magazine, (we may have loaners
Flashlight: Weapon attached lights are ideal but not required
Holster. You should bring a holster that you intend to use for carrying after receiving your CCW. If you are not sure which holster, you will use yet, we recommend an (outside the waistband) holster) for range day. We can loan you these holsters for the Glock models 17,19, 43 and 43 X
Belt: sturdy belt that supports the weight of your carry gun, long pants with belt loops.
Target Ammunition: 300 rounds (We will have 9mm ammunition available for market cost)
Eye and Ear protection: Noise cancelling type, rentals are free, or you can bring your own.
What’s included? Fingerprinting, application and required photo are all included in your course fee. Lane Fees and targets are included as well.
