The Utah Provisional concealed firearm permit for 18 year olds

At Concealed Carry Class Utah we get a number of students who are unaware that an 18 year old can get a Utah Concealed Firearm permit, (CFP), or a concealed carry license in the State of Utah. The Utah Provisional Concealed firearms permit  is issued for those between the age of 18 and 20 years old. 

What is the Utah Provisional Concealed Firearms permit license?

The Utah provisional concealed carry license has the similar privileges as the Standard permit with the exception that those under 21 under the provisional firearm permit are not allowed to carry in the following areas until they turn 21 and receive the Standard Utah concealed firearms permit:  public or private elementary schools, secondary schools, (K-12), public and private institutions of higher education, (colleges and universities) and preschool and childcare facilities where children are, until they are age 21 and apply for the Utah Standard permit. Other than these exceptions a provisional license has the same privileges as the Standard Utah Concealed firearm permit.

Another benefit in getting the Utah Provisional firearms permit license is that you can also legally conceal carry your handgun in 20 states after receiving your provisional license,  including Utah. 

The following states have a reciprocity agreement with Utah Bureau of criminal Identification and will honor your Utah permit in the following states; Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Vermont and Wyoming.

What is needed with my Utah provisional concealed firearms permit license application?

The process of applying for the Utah Provisional firearms permit are the same as for the Standard adult license, you will need to complete an application from the Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification, (BCI), submit a set of fingerprints for a criminal background check, submit a passport style photo and pay $53.25 directly to BCI, payable with a check, money order, or on the application you can list your credit card number at the bottom of your application and they will charge that fee when they process your concealed firearm license. Concealed Carry Class Utah provides the required fingerprinting, which is included in when you register for the class. We can also provide the required photo services in our concealed carry classes for an additional fee of $15 and will even hand deliver your application to BCI at no extra charge when you pay for the photo service. It will take about 60 days for your permit to arrive in the mailbox

How can I switch over to the standard license when I turn 21?

You can apply for the standard Utah concealed firearms permit up to 90 days prior to your 21st birthday, and no later than one year after your provisional permit license expires. You will need to complete a form called an application to switch from a provisional permit to a regular permit, pay a $10.00 fee payable to BCI, submit a passport style photo, and provide copies of both your Utah Driver license and your Utah Provisional Firearms Permit license. If you don’t have time to run around getting photos, copies and the application, we can take care of the renewal and transition to get your Utah standard concealed carry license for a fee of $15.00 by making an appointment with us. Simply choose “photo service” on our website and you can come in during office hours and we will take care of that for you and hand deliver your permit application to BCI at no additional cost to you. Can someone under the age of 21 buy a handgun in Utah?

It is legal in Utah for someone over the age of 18 to own and possess a handgun. Some people are gifted guns and some have purchased a handgun from a private seller. An FFL dealer (Federal Firearms License dealer) or gun dealer is restricted by federal law from selling firearms to those under the age of 21. 

In summary, a person 18-20 years old can get a Utah Provisional firearms permit that allows them to carry their handgun in 20 states, the transition to the standard Utah permit is easy once the permit holder turns 21 by simply filling out a form and paying a $10.00 fee.
