Houston Woman Shot and Killed During Possible Robbery in The Heights: Why Personal Safety Training Matters

A tragic incident in Houston is reminding residents that violent crime can happen anywhere — even in neighborhoods that are considered relatively safe.

According to reports from the Houston Police Department, a woman was shot and killed in Houston Heights late Friday night during what investigators believe may have been a robbery, (also known as a car- jacking). The shooting occurred around midnight near West 20th Street and Lawrence Street. according to the ABC13 Houston news channel.

Police say the victim had parked her vehicle and was walking to a friend’s home when the suspect approached her. Investigators believe the encounter may have been a robbery attempt that turned deadly.

First responders transported the woman to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries, this is so heartbreaking and sad.

Shortly after the shooting, officers located a stolen vehicle believed to be connected to the crime, which led to a police chase along the Southwest Freeway. The suspect eventually crashed the vehicle and barricaded himself inside an apartment complex before being taken into custody, SWAT responded and after hours, took the suspect into custody.

The investigation is ongoing.

Violent Crime Can Happen Anywhere in Houston

The Heights is widely known as one of Houston’s most popular neighborhoods, filled with restaurants, nightlife, and residential communities.

But incidents like this serve as a reminder that crime can occur in any part of the city.

Situations like robberies, carjackings, and assaults often happen quickly and without warning. Many victims are simply going about their normal daily routine — walking to their car, visiting friends, or returning home.

Understanding how to recognize threats, avoid dangerous encounters, and protect yourself legally is one reason many Texans choose to pursue a License to Carry (LTC). This is something as a Texas LTC Instructor, I harp on with students in our Non-Verbal Dispute resolution as part of our class. Not saying she did, but many people think they are safe in their cars, many don’t even lock doors, or leave windows down at night making them targets for thugs like this.

Why Many Houston Residents Are Getting a Texas LTC, WE offer the online Texas LTC class here https://TexasLTCtrainingacademy.com/texas-ltc-online-course-houston-texas/

Texas allows permitless carry for some individuals, but obtaining a Texas License to Carry (LTC) still provides several important advantages.

Many Houston residents choose to take an LTC class to learn:

  • Texas self-defense and deadly force laws

  • Situational awareness and crime avoidance

  • Safe handgun handling and storage

  • Legal use of force during robberies or violent attacks

  • Conflict avoidance and de-escalation techniques

An LTC course isn’t just about carrying a handgun — it’s about education, responsibility, and understanding the law.

What You Learn in a Texas LTC Class

A professional Texas LTC class in Houston typically covers:

Texas Self-Defense Laws

Students learn when force and deadly force may be legally justified under Texas law.

Conflict Resolution

Many courses teach ways to avoid violence whenever possible through situational awareness and verbal de-escalation.

Handgun Safety

Safe storage, safe handling, and proper firearm operation are essential topics.

Responsible Carry

Students also learn where firearms are prohibited and how to responsibly carry in public.

Why Situational Awareness Matters: Conditions are White, Yellow, Orange, Red and Black.

White: Is an unaware state, ok to be like this at home usually.

Yellow: An aware state, ie your head is on a swivel looking for possible danger, or threats, for example, you are walking to your car and you notice someone standing by your car at night.

Orange: You are deciding on what type of action you are going to take, for example, if you are alone, you may want to return inside the store until the person is gone, or when it is otherwise safe

Red: This is an immediate action state, for example, the suspect approaches you and demands your car keys, you act at this point, hopefully when you were in orange, you were deciding on what you would do if attacked, you could try escaping, or if you were really being robbed, a reasonable person would likely believe it was immediately necessary to defend their life with deadly force, (many people do that are armed)

  • robberies often happen when victims are distracted, bad guys like easy, soft targets, that is fact as my experience as a LEO

  • awareness reduces risk, you should always be in Condition Yellow, when walking to your car, or even in your car, even if the door is locked.

 Texas Self-Defense Laws

Understanding Texas Self-Defense and Use of Force Laws

  • Texas Penal Code 9.31 (use of force)

  • Texas Penal Code 9.32 (deadly force) Deadly force can be justified if you are being robbed under the law, if she had been armed, she may have had a chance, who knows for sure, we don’t know all the facts but many LTC holders are able to defend themselves while armed. These are all discussed in My Texas LTC courses with students and we often run scenarios like this to prepare students for this exact scenario, as it is very common.

Personal Safety Starts With Awareness

While no training can guarantee safety, education and preparation can help people make better decisions in dangerous situations.

Incidents like this tragic shooting highlight why personal safety training and legal knowledge matter.

Being aware of your surroundings, avoiding risky situations, and understanding Texas law can all help reduce the chances of becoming a victim.

How many of you carry every day, do you carry one in the chamber? If not, this should be a personal goal, that will prepare and protect you from crimes like this.

Is your carry gun readily accessible when walking to your car at night? Purse? Bad! get an IWB for these activities
