Handgun Proficiency Qualification in Houston – Texas LTC Shooting Test
If you have completed the Texas LTC Online Course through our website — or even if you took your classroom portion with another provider — you are required by the State of Texas to complete the Handgun Proficiency Qualification.
This live-fire range qualification is mandated by the Texas Department of Public Safety and must be conducted by a certified LTC instructor.

What Is the Texas LTC Handgun Proficiency Qualification?
The handgun proficiency qualification is a mandatory 1–2 hour live-fire training session that evaluates your ability to safely and consistently handle a handgun, while also shooting with a defensive degree of accuracy.
- Approximately 1 hour for experienced shooters
- Up to 2 hours for those needing additional coaching and instruction
During your session, your instructor will require you to demonstrate:
- Safe handgun handling
- Proper loading and unloading procedures
- Basic shooting fundamentals
- Muzzle discipline and trigger control
- Safe drawing and re-holstering (if using a holster)

The 50-Round Timed Shooting Test
The Texas LTC shooting test consists of:
- 50 total rounds
- Timed stages of fire
Distances of:
- 3 yards
- 7 yards
- 15 yards
You will be evaluated on accuracy, safety, and consistency.

What You Need to Bring
To complete your Houston handgun qualification, you must bring:
- A working semi-automatic handgun or revolver
- 100 rounds of ammunition
- Payment for the range lane fee (set by the range)
- Pants with belt loops
- A sturdy belt
- A hat
- Weather-appropriate clothing
- Plenty of hydration
Holster
Holsters are optional, but strongly encouraged. We prefer that you bring your own holster so we can ensure you are drawing and re-holstering properly and safely.
Eye & Ear Protection
We provide eye protection, ear protection, and targets. If you own noise-canceling ear muffs and/or personal eye protection, you are welcome to use your own equipment.
Cost for the Texas LTC Handgun Qualification
$100 per person for one hour-150.00 for the two- hour appointment
