What is the Texas LTC Instructor School Like in Florence, Texas-How do I become a Texas LTC Instructor?

If you’ve ever thought about becoming a firearm instructor in Texas, the Texas LTC Instructor School in Florence is where your journey begins, but first, you must apply for the Texas LTC Instructor through the DPS website.

What is needed?

  • You will first need to be a certified handgun instructor through the NRA, with unexpired credentials, or other qualifying entity.  They will ask you to upload a copy of your Basic Pistol Instructor Certificate. If you are in Texas, or Utah, I can provide you the NRA Basic Pistol (Instructor LED) 8-hour training here before you go to a training counselor for the two-day pistol course, just shoot me an email, and I may be able to come to your area https://TexasLTCtrainingacademy.com/
  • You will fill out the LTC handgun instructor license application and pay the 100.00 fee, (I started this process in January 2025) and didn’t receive my License to carry Instructor certificate until September 2025.
  • DPS will do a background check on you, and they will send you to a third party (Identigo) for fingerprinting. IF you live to far from one other their offices, DPS may approve you to go a law enforcement agency in your area, not if this happens, you will ask for handgun licensing to send you one of their DPS FBI fingerprint cards.
  • Play the waiting game for several months while your backgr0und check is completed. (EMAIL is the best way to reach them during the process)
  • Once approved, you will get an email from Texas handgun licensing with an invitation, to attend their required 2 1/2-day training at the DPS facility in Florence Texas. (Be first to reply to the email to get into the next available class. They sent me an invitation on July 7th, 2025 with three possible dates to attend. DPS only offered three Instructor classes for 2025, the dates were

Course 1: September 3-5, 2025

Course 2: October 28-30, 2025

Course 3: November 17-19, 2025

This state-approved training program is designed for experienced shooters who want to teach others how to safely earn their Texas LTC concealed carry Instructor license and understand Texas firearm laws. Note: Texas DPS made it clear, they do NOT teach you how to be an instructor, they basically just teach you the 4–6-hour class over two 7-hour days, then on the third day you qualify on both the semi-auto handgun AND a double action revolver.

The DPS training facility is located in the quiet town of Florence, Texas, this school offers a professional, no-nonsense environment where participants receive classroom instruction and range qualifications. The course prepares students to teach future handgun owners everything required to apply for their Texas concealed carry license, including firearm safety, storage, and the legal use of force.

Training Structure

The Texas LTC Instructor School is taught by certified DPS-approved professionals (State Police) who walk you through both classroom and range training. The first two days covers the required curriculum, and time frames you are allowed to teach the four areas: firearm safety and storage, state laws on carry and use of force, de-escalation, and the legal responsibilities of carrying under a concealed carry license.

You’ll also learn the Texas Penal Code sections relevant to deadly force (Chapter 9) firearm transportation and prohibited areas. On day 3 of the course, you to the DPS outdoor range where you will have to qualify on both the Semi-auto AND a revolver.

What is the Texas LTC Instructor handgun proficiency qualification like?

  • The semi auto and revolvers have to be at least .32 caliber or higher for Instructors, you can use red dots if they are not magnified. I qualified with a Glock 19 and a Taurus Tracker .44 magnum with a 3-inch barrel! I was the only one there that used a .44.
  • You will shoot revolver first on the Standard 50 round qualification, then do the same on the semi-auto.
  • Instructors need to score at least 90% or higher (a 225/250 or higher on the handgun qualification for BOTH guns
  • This will be 20 shots from 3 yards, 20 from 7 yards and 10 shots from 15 yards, super easy.
  • There were 80 LTC Instructor Students in the September class, their range has 62 targets, so they had to do a morning and afternoon relay. There were only 1 Range Instructors to every 5 students on the line that day. They will be watching you for safety, first and foremost.
  • This is timed, so if you can’t clear a malfunction, in the allotted time for that shot string they will be counted as “misses”
  • In the classroom portion and on the written test, you will be taught how to score the targets AND when you are on the range, you will be expected to score your partners target the way you were taught in class. The qualification is super easy; I got a perfect 250 on the Glock and 248 on the .44 magnum, firing it in 13-pound double action mode.
  • I got emailed my concealed carry handgun Instructor certificate about one week after I passed the qualification, so it took about 8 months from start to finish. I heard some folks say they waited (2 years) to get into the LTC instructor school

Upon successful completion, you become eligible to instruct others seeking their concealed carry license, you can not teach until they send you an email with your certificate attached.
