How to Find a Texas LTC Certified Instructor Near You (And Make Sure They’re Legit)

Finding a Texas LTC Certified Instructor — The Right Way

If you’re getting ready to apply for your Texas License to Carry (LTC), you’ll need two things:

  1. A Texas LTC Online or in person Course (the classroom portion), and

  2. A Texas Handgun Proficiency Test appointment with a DPS-certified LTC Instructor.

Texas makes the learning portion easy by allowing students to complete the Texas LTC online course anytime, from anywhere. But once the course is completed, it’s critical to schedule your handgun proficiency test with a qualified instructor who is actively licensed by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Here’s how to quickly find a current, legitimate, certified Texas LTC Instructor in your area — and how to avoid wasting time with instructors who are expired, inactive, or not authorized by DPS.

✅ Step 1: Use the Official Texas DPS LTC Instructor Lookup Tool right here https://www.dps.texas.gov/section/handgun-licensing/instructors

If you don’t see an instructors name on this list, don’t use them

Texas DPS provides a public tool that allows you to verify whether an instructor is:

  • Currently Certified as a handgun instructor and what other certifications they hold.

  • Approved to teach the LTC course and the Handgun Proficiency Test

Simply search by:

  • The Instructor’s name

  • The counties they serve, some instructors are available to “teach statewide” and you can look for those instructors specifically.

Before you pay anyone or schedule your qualification, make sure their name appears on the DPS list.

✅ Step 2: Look for These Indicators of a Legitimate LTC Instructor

A real, current Texas LTC Instructor will always be issued a certificate by Texas handgun licensing, here is a copy of mine Texas Instructor certificate 2025

  • Display their Texas DPS Instructor ID number.

  • Provide proof of being actively certified.

  • Be able to issue you the required LTC-101 form after your proficiency test.

  • Answer basic questions about Texas gun laws, class requirements, and carry regulations.

If they can’t provide a certificate, or instructor number, or avoid questions about certification — walk away.

✅ Step 3: Choose an Instructor Who Offers Convenient Proficiency Test Scheduling

After completing the online or in person class, every student must complete the Texas Handgun Proficiency Test. Choose an instructor from the list that offers:

  • Flexible appointment scheduling and on the instructor list with handgun licensing

This test is required before submitting your application to Texas DPS, so it’s essential to schedule it promptly before or after your online course.
