Tips for Encounters with Law Enforcement Officers While Armed
As a law enforcement officer myself for three decades, I’ve conducted hundreds of traffic stops and other public contacts. Most armed citizens are responsible and respectful—but small mistakes or misunderstandings can quickly increase tension during an encounter.
Whether you already have your License to Carry (LTC) or are preparing to take a Texas Online LTC Class, these practical tips will help ensure your interaction is safe, calm, and professional for everyone involved.
1. Stay Calm and Keep Your Hands Visible
The first thing officers look for during any contact is hands!
This was drilled into our heads in the police academy and on the job training. This is by far, the most important thing to always show open hands, and DO NOT place your hands in your pockets at any time! The first guy that did this innocently during a suspicious person call, had a gun drawn on him. This male was a burglary suspect, had baggy pants on and reached into a pocket where I saw a bulge in his pants to what I believed was a weapon.
If you’re in a vehicle:
-
Pull over safely and promptly
-
Roll down both front windows
-
Turn off the engine
-
Place your hands on the steering wheel
-
Keep passengers’ hands visible as well
Avoid sudden movement. Wait until the officer asks you for documents before getting them, WHY? because they don’t know what you are doing while calling out your license plate and if they seeing you reaching into the glove box, or under the seat, (you dropped something) they can justify having you exit the car for a search of those areas where you made those furtive movements.
2. Inform the Officer You Are Carrying
In Texas, there is no general duty to inform, UNLESS THEY ASK YOU it is a good practice to calmly notify the officer. Don’t just blurt out “I have a gun!”
For example, you want to preface this by saying:
“Officer, I have a license to carry, then, I also wanted to let you know I am legally carrying a firearm. How would you like me to proceed?”
Do not reach for the firearm or your wallet until given instructions.
If you have done this correctly you have set a very positive tone for the entire stop—something emphasized in our Texas LTC Online Course.
3. Follow Instructions Exactly
Every stop is different. Every Officer responds differently, the officer may say:
-
Leave the firearm where it is
-
Temporarily secure it
-
Ask you to exit the vehicle
Follow instructions slowly and verbally confirm actions:
“My wallet is in my back pocket. May I reach for it?”
Clear communication reduces stress for everyone.
4. Avoid Sudden Movements
Many problems occur when people:
-
Reach quickly into glove boxes
-
Dig around under seats
-
Move hands out of sight
Tell the officer where documents are located before reaching.
This is a core principle taught in any quality Texas License to Carry training program.
5. Be Professional and Courteous
Your attitude matters.
-
Stay respectful
-
Avoid arguments roadside-IF you disagree with something they are doing, you can request a supervisor, or file a complaint after they release you.
-
Address concerns later through proper channels by asking for a Sgt. or above
Remember: the goal of the encounter is safety—not winning a debate.
6. Keep Your LTC and ID Accessible
If you hold a Texas LTC:
-
Keep your driver’s license and LTC together
-
Inform the officer before reaching
-
Move slowly and deliberately
Preparation prevents confusion and speeds up the stop.
7. Know the Law Before You Carry

Where you can legally carry
