What Is a Carry Plan?
A carry plan is a personalized strategy that helps a Texas License to Carry (LTC) holder consistently carry a handgun COMFORTABLY throughout daily life from the moment you leave the home until you safely return home and go to bed.
Comfortable concealed carry is more than simply owning a firearm—it requires A DESIRE to carry comfortably. It requires a practical manner in planning. A well-designed carry plan ensures that your everyday carry (EDC) choices align with Texas law, your lifestyle, and your personal safety goals and most of all feeling COMFORTABLE doing so, there have I said that word enough yet?
Note: Developing a Texas LTC carry plan is what you should be working on AFTER you have spent at least a full day on the range and have shot at least 250 rounds with a competent Instructor. If you are not comfortable “running your gun” You won’t be carrying on any meaningful basis.
Why Every Texas LTC Holder Needs a Carry Plan
Carrying a handgun daily involves constant decision-making. Without a plan, you may find yourself unprepared in that you may be:
-
Entering a prohibited location
-
Leaving your firearm unsecured in a vehicle
-
Dressing in a way that prevents proper concealment known as “printing”
- Learning what holster options are available for both men and women
-
Forgetting key safety steps due to not handling your handgun enough that engrains this into muscle memory
A structured carry plan helps you:
- Carry Comfortably anywhere
-
Stay compliant with Texas LTC laws
-
Maintain consistent safe handling habits
Key Elements of a Successful Carry Plan
1. Daily Schedule Review
Think about all the places you routinely go throughout the day and whether those locations allow carry and write them down. Does your work allow carry? OR the grocery store, the gym, picking up kids from school, you know what I mean. When you can’t carry into one of the following places, do you have a safe for the gun to go in, while you are in there?
Texas law restricts firearms in certain places such as:
-
Federal buildings
-
Courthouses
-
Schools (with exceptions)
-
Properly posted 51% or 30.06/30.07 locations at businesses
Having this safety plan in place assures you are always carrying your handgun in a holster, (on your body, under your control), or in a gun safe that is at home, or in your car.
2. Comfortable Concealment Strategy-Choosing the right handgun and holster for your needs:
Dress for the gun you are carrying, not bring the gun to the dress. Carrying concealed should always be comfortable, no matter where you are going in your daily activities.
-
Weather and clothing choices, are you wearing this with a dress, or a T-shirt and Jeans.
-
Work environment
-
Comfort for all-day carry
My best recommendation for those that have not purchased a handgun yet is choosing a pocket size subcompact to start and if available to rent the handgun first before buying one and buying the right holster/s for your plan. Glock 42, 43, Sig Sauer P-365 and small revolvers are great first choices.
3. Secure Storage Plan
Every carry plan should include safe storage options for times when carry isn’t allowed.
Options include:
-
Vehicle gun safes
-
Lockboxes at home
-
Temporary off-body secure storage
Responsible storage protects your firearm from theft and unauthorized access.
4. Situational Awareness and Decision-Making
A strong carry plan includes mental preparation:
-
Avoid high-risk environments when possible
-
Practice de-escalation techniques through scenarios and role plays when available.
-
Understand when not to carry, when drinking, or on drugs, prescription, or not if it impairs your ability to safely carry.
-
Always prioritize safety and conflict avoidance
5. Legal Awareness
Texas LTC holders must understand:
-
Use-of-force laws in a practical manner
-
Location restrictions
-
Duty to inform (when applicable)
-
Civil and criminal liability considerations
- Must have a good understanding how to navigate yourself in the event you are involved in a critical incident, including interactions with responding police
A carry plan keeps you operating comfortably within the law at all times.
